about

self-released on bandcamp

This new chapter in the work-in-progress solo series was played on wind instruments and was captured in 2018-2022. In recent years I've concentrated on modular synthesizer and electronics a bit more, but the saxophone is still the most familiar instrument for me and I still try to find new ways to play it.

First tracks recorded on Soprano Venova, a plastic instrument invented by Yamaha. I always wanted to have a portable instrument and was very interested in a new «toy», but after some time I decided to sell it because of lack of time to work with the soprano sax mouthpiece that this instrument needs. I did a few recordings with it, here are two tracks from home and one from the same forest that you can hear on "A Fluteophone in the Forest'' album, which was recorded a year after.

Next two tracks are recorded on alto saxophone in the rotunda of Mayakovsky library in different concerts in 2019. It is a very special place for musicians in Saint Petersburg because of its huge acoustics, and used to be a Dutch church in the past. It is not an easy place to play, and that year I had 3 tries to find a way to play solo sax there.

The track from Oslo is significant for me. It is was my last gig abroad before the pandemic started, and I had great pleasure to play a long solo set in a very calm and quiet place. I had many plans for the future in mind, it is so unusual to remember that situation now. The gig was around 55 minutes in total. It was almost impossible to cut something from the whole storytelling, but this short excerpt sounds like a complete story.

The next track was recorded at a small farm near Petersburg in a big wooden house with a warm acoustic space. At that moment I had started to explore a plastic reed more closely, and that was the first gig that was played only on it.

Nature was again around me in the Swiss Alps, with cows and their bells. Small wooden house. This was the beginning of my first trip abroad after all that has happened since 2020. I had no idea I wouldn’t be going back home after a 3 weeks residency in Switzerland.

The last piece is a complete short set in Biel/Bienne, it was also the first gig outside Petersburg since February 2020. More to say, it was my first gig after January 2022, for me it was not easy to find a reason to play in Petersburg in the new reality which came that February... Here I used a timer and sound signals as some marks for this solo that I played on a tribune of a small football field surrounded by watch factories. Big acoustics and environmental sounds, and the questions of reacting or not reacting to them. The timer is counting, while the mind is walking around.
