The rustles come from different sources. I made first recordings for this record in Hammerfest (Norway) in 2014 during the residency of the Foxes Fluff duo where I work with choreographer Anna Antipova. We used lots of cardboard boxes in our performance. Their sound was recorded with contact mics. In 2015, in Poznan (Poland) I happened to be in a cozy café where you got a balloon with your order. I kept it till the end of the trip and started using as a sound object at home and recording the result. These haphazards characterize the general air of this record – spontaneity alongside with the conscious process, unexpectedness breaks through the sophisticated structures.
The box and the balloon spoke to me for one simple reason – I play the saxophone. Seemingly, there’s nothing alike between the musical instrument and these ordinary things. But I don’t just breathe into the saxophone (like a balloon) but also use the surface of the instrument for phonation (and I used the surface of the box the same way). And the sound of the balloon is somewhat similar, but the cardboard of the box is very different from the saxophone’s metal. I didn’t process the raw sound beyond recognition on principle but worked mainly with equalization and editing.
What interested me was the overlapping of different sound layers, using silence and side sounds, the rough and raw source material, electronic noise and rhythmic patterns played live. I hope that the listeners will find them interesting as well.
